This year marks the second time Camp Bowie Historic Society has chosen me to be featured artist for Jazz by the Boulevard Festival. This painting is my version of a little jazz combo band playing outside on the bricks of Camp Bowie Blvd. In the background you'll notice some the landmarks of our cultural district, including the Miro sculpture in front of the Kimbell and the Serra in front of the Modern. I'm honored to have the opportunity to contribute to my home in any way, and participating in the Jazz by the Blvd event is always a blast. The music is second to none and the crowd is always jam packed with beautiful, friendly, jazz knowledgeable and art savvy Fort Worth people.
Jazz has always been a living embodiment of the rule breakers. My art has tinges of expressionism, abstraction and a synthetic sort of cubism. Though I often have a recognizable object in my paintings, I believe the most important element is the immediate aesthetic feelings generated by the color, composition and line, regardless of the subject involved.
I prefer to paint in oil as its long drying time enables the subtle adjustment of color needed to get where I want to be. My approach to the creative process usually begins with a feeling, and without preliminary sketches, going straight to linear composition on the canvas, proceeding directly to the application of color, wet on wet, to the forms created in line.
I've been painting all my life, but have only been a full-time working artist for about six years. Jazz by the Boulevard played a significant role in my current life choice. In 2005, the first time was I chosen as featured artist, I was working full-time in the printing business—my career for 30 years. The positive experience, sales as well as crowd response, convinced me that I might be able to fulfill my lifetime dream of working as an artist. Jazz by the Boulevard will always have a special place in my heart for having been a catalyst that moved me in this new direction.
